BREAKING PARIS
Carlos Mare

The break in large format, in the streets of Paris

For the first time, Carlos Mare — major figure of the New York graffiti and pioneer of the link between visual arts and hip-hop culture — is invited to Paris for a project around the breaking, a discipline he has been exploring for more than thirty years in his sculptural practice.
On this occasion, he designed Bboy HeadSpinnaHis greatest sculpture to date. Installed in free access on the platform of the Big Cailloux, in front of Fluctuart, the work translates in volume the dynamics of a rotating body, suspended between equilibrium and imbalance. She pays tribute to the raw energy of the break, the physical commitment of the dancers·Use·s, and the choreographic vitality that inhabits the streets of the capital.

In the Menilmontant district, the artist also signs a mural on the facade of the Pavillon Carré de Baudouin, made with the support of the Art Azoi association. Coloured, expressive and rooted in Mare's graphic language, this work also celebrates the movement, including an assumed urban aesthetic. Visible in open access until October, it extends in another register the same search: that of a gesture frozen, but loaded with momentum.

Sculpture, fresco, public space: this project articulates several languages to make dialogue between urban art and hip-hop culture, at the scale of the city as well as at the level of the gaze. It is accompanied by a series of projections, meetings and moments of sharing, to further broaden the scope of this invitation to the movement.
